High school students from the Computer Science Hon High school students from the Computer Science Honor Society led an activity in fifth through eighth-grade advisories on November 27 💻. To celebrate the start of Computer Science and Computational Thinking week, high school students challenged students with some computational thinking activities. In grades 5 and 6, students had to come up with rules to help someone win at tic-tac-toe and then they traded rules to see if their steps worked. In grades 7 and 8, students learned about data compression by trying to translate nursery rhymes into coded messages. The high school students also talked about how computational thinking connected to computer science. Eleventh-grader Sage Sauders talked about how she had initially signed up for two introductory computer science courses in her freshman year, despite not knowing if she would like it or not. “But taking the courses, I found myself really excited by computer science and the opportunity to be creative whilst trying something new,” Saunders said. 📸 Photos by Zoe
Students show off their spooky spirit on Halloween Students show off their spooky spirit on Halloween. During advisory time, students watched and participated in a Halloween-themed quiz bowl where participants were asked general questions, and took part in a lightning round and physical challenge. The Orange team came out on top in a closely fought battle🏆. Students vote for candidates during the student co Students vote for candidates during the student council elections on October 18. Voting took place before school, during morning break, and during recess and lunch. Potential representatives submitted essays to their grade level and gave speeches on the morning of October 17. After the votes were counted, four candidates were elected per grade, as well as one alternate. Student council reps are as follows:  Grade 5  Ariadne Hadjigeorgiou, Jacinda Kraft ,Callum Pringle, Raeya Vats. Alternates: Madison Liao and Carter Lintz   Grade 6: David Nichomoff, Parker Rosenberg, Amelia Seminara, Ari Tepekoylu Alternate: Joah Sachs   Grade 7: Mohammed Elemam, Adam Gapper, Spencer Lintz, Silas Masimore. Alternate: Murad Sharafeldin Grade 8 Aksel Aryas, Benjamin Podurgiel, Nishka Singh, Antonia Waterman. Alternate: Alexander Robinson. The representatives will vote on executive officers later this month.
Seventh through eighth-graders line up when recess Seventh through eighth-graders line up when recess ends after a new lunch line system was established. The new system was created because of complaints from students about last year's ways. Now at the end of recess when the whistle blows, students line up by advisory group. For the eighth-grade, that's on the basketball fence, and for the seventh-graders, they are against the wall on the football field. They then get dismissed by advisory; every other day, a different grade gets dismissed first. "The old system did not work well for many reasons,” eighth-grader Yasmin Taraporvala said. "Many students would cut the line to get to lunch. First, it was difficult for teachers to direct two grades worth of students because the line was so unorganized, so students would have to wait for around ten minutes to get to the lunch room, which ultimately took away time to eat." A group of middle school students were able to mis A group of middle school students were able to miss classes on September 29 to attend a practice of the Jacksonville Jaguars, an American football team who had a game against the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on October 1. The Jaguars were based at a Watford resort with a full-sized American football field. Students got to run through some flag football drills by Jaguars staff and players and then watched the Jaguars run through a practice. Weekly sports update. ⚽📣 The eighth-grade gir Weekly sports update. ⚽📣 The eighth-grade girls' football team competes in the Westminster Secondary Football Tournament all day on October 2 at Paddington Recreation Ground. The team played a total of nine 7-minute games and participated in shooting penalties if extra time was needed. The team cheered for their teammates and showed great sportsmanship at the end of each game by shaking hands with their opponents. Out of nine schools, the Eagles earned fourth place. "Running up and down the pitch with adrenaline rushing through my body is something that only football gives me. I'm proud we finally have a solid team of girls after three years of nothing because no one wanted to play," eighth-grader and center-mid Isabella Prosperi said. 📸 Photos by Zoe Moss
Students came together to compete, watch, and eat Students came together to compete, watch, and eat food during the first social of the year on September 22. Students in grades 5-8 enjoyed hanging out with friends, taking photos at the photo booth, as well as participating in or watching the basketball and football tournaments on the playground and in the Blue and Farmer gyms. Student council organized a dunk tank and bake sal Student council organized a dunk tank and bake sale at recess on May 26 to raise money for the Mozaik Foundation and White Helmets. Students enjoyed watching and dunking their favorite teachers while also munching on home baked treats made by their peers.
The first full middle school talent show of the ye The first full middle school talent show of the year was held during advisory on May 26. Students sang, played piano, recited poetry in front of an excited audience that made the morning very eventful. Many students felt it was an entertaining activity for the last day before the long weekend.
On April 6, grade 8 students spent the day at the On April 6, grade 8 students spent the day at the Globe Theatre for their English class, along with a stop at Borough Market. They toured the building, learned about its history, and engaged in an acting course with actual performers from the Globe. The students agreed it was a great experience and a fun activity before spring break.

The grade 8 boys basketball team participated in t The grade 8 boys basketball team participated in the end-of-season LSSA Festival on March 2 winning all three of their games. They ended the regular season undefeated, including winning the International School of Aberdeen tournament in February. Although the winter sports season in the middle school is now officially over, the grade 8 boys basketball team's season has been extended because they have qualified for the London Youth Games U14 Final Four on March 27. 📸 Photos by Ema Dulaj
Several middle school students held a bake sale on Several middle school students held a bake sale on March 3 during recess to raise money for people living in Turkey after the recent earthquakes. Students then enjoyed treats during their recess time while contributing to a good cause. The Middle School celebrates the last day before t The Middle School celebrates the last day before the holidays with an exciting assembly. Students were recognized for achievements, we heard special performances from the 8th grade choir and orchestra, a goodbye was held to those leaving this semester, and students were surprised with a song from their teachers. Many felt it was a wonderful way to spend the last school day of 2022.
Middle School students celebrate the first snow of Middle School students celebrate the first snow of the school year with snow ball fights, playing soccer and enjoying the wintery weather view. Many said it was a great start to the last week of this semester.
Students celebrate American Thanksgiving at lunch Students celebrate American Thanksgiving at lunch on November 22 with traditional turkey, potatoes, veggies, and pumpkin pie for dessert. Many felt that it was a fun way to spend the last school day before the short holiday.
Last week, The Scroll editors attended the Nationa Last week, The Scroll editors attended the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) convention in St. Louis, Missouri! At this event, several awards were announced and distributed. This years’ November issue of The Scroll achieved a first place NSPA Best in Show award. Last years’ issues of The Scroll won a Pacemaker Finalist Plaque, meaning that they were among the best nominees of the competition. Another award was the Pacemaker 100. One year ago, NSPA turned 100 years old. Last year, in commemoration of this event, they went into their records to find all past Pacemaker award winners. The 100 middle and high newspapers with the most Pacemakers were complied—and The Scroll was on that list! Although they didn’t contribute to this achievement, our current Scroll editors received this award on behalf of previous award-winning editors. Additionally, many Scroll editors and staff won individual writing and media awards. These awards consisted of Middle School Design, Broadcast Story, and Broadcast of the Year; as well as Awards of Excellency in Review and Sports writing and Honorable Mentions in the First Year Photo and Features Writing categories. #eagles #thescroll #theamericanschoolinlondon

The team was in London to prepare for their game against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium on October 30. Following participation in drills with Jag-Tag coaches and Jaguars players, students were given the opportunity to observe the NFL team’s practice.
