Students should be allowed to carry backpacks

At ASL, the high school students are allowed to carry their backpacks to class, whereas middle schoolers don’t yet have that opportunity. Carrying backpacks around the school during the day saves a lot of time and causes fewer distractions when going back and forth from classes. Therefore, middle school students should be able to carry their backpacks around the school during the day.

Being able to carry around backpacks will help students greatly because they won’t have to go back to their lockers if they forgot something for class, as they will just have to look in their backpacks. Also, if students were allowed to bring their backpacks to class, they would be able to go straight to their next class when the block ends. This would mean they would not have to go all the way back to their lockers.

When students go to their lockers, they usually see their friends and are tempted to talk with them, making them late to class. If students were allowed to carry their backpacks around, there would be less of a chance of them bumping into their friends. Carrying backpacks would also ensure that we have everything for class meaning that we would not be late as much.

Moreover, the middle school hallways are crowded and filled with students during the breaks between classes. This is because the lockers for each grade level are all packed next to the pods. For example, the fifth-grade lockers are right next to the fifth-grade pod, the sixth-grade lockers are right next to the sixth-grade pod, and so on. If students did not have to crowd around the same area several times a day, the middle school hallways would be much more peaceful and it would be a lot easier to get around.

Anya Mourad, a seventh grader said, I think being able to carry backpacks around will be really helpful to students because if you accidentally forget something you need for class, all you have to do is check your bag. She also said, “This could help students because if you are having a struggle with your lock and you have two minutes until class starts, you are definitely going to be late”. She said, “ but if you have your backpack it could save you being late to class.”

Mr. Rooks, a seventh-grade social studies teacher mentioned that “It helps students be more organized and not have to go back to their locker every two minutes because they forgot their laptop or anything. They would just have to look in their book bag.” He stated that he “doesn’t have a dog in the fight.”

Carrying backpacks around the middle school can save time and create a more efficient working environment. I believe that the school should change the system and allow students to carry their materials around with them for all the previous reasons.
