Eighth-grade students perform their twist on scene Eighth-grade students perform their twist on scenes in Shakespeare’s “A Midnight Summer Dream.” The performances come at the end of a long unit that started with a visit to the Globe Theater's acting studios where groups had workshops with actors and participated in a multitude of acting and Shakespeare activities. Students then spent just under two weeks studying, analyzing, and performing scenes from “A Midnight Summer Dream.” During their study of the play, they also experimented with themes like gender roles, power, race, and more. The U14 softball team played against ACS Hilligdon The U14 softball team played against ACS Hilligdon's co-ed softball team at Canons Park on May 2. The Eagles played four very close and intense innings that ended with ASL losing by 2 to ACS Hillingdon. The girls and boys U14 volleyball teams and the U1 The girls and boys U14 volleyball teams and the U14 softball team traveled to Brussels to take part in a two-day tournament against the International School of Brussels (ISB) and Frankfurt International School (FIS). These were the first competitive games the Eagles had participated in this season, and resulted in the girls volleyball team coming second, boys volleyball team coming first and the softball team coming in third. Middle school students gathered in the School Cent Middle school students gathered in the School Center to listen to a special guest speaker on April 24. Dr Howard Stevenson is a professor from the University of Pennsylvania who is the director of the Racial Empowerment Collaborative. Students listened to Stevenson's stories about his time growing up as a person of color and the discrimination that came with it. In addition, Stevenson shared his past profession as a therapist and what he has learned from hearing other people's stories about their experiences with discrimination against their identity. During the assembly, Stevenson led students in activities to teach them how to CLCBE, Calculate, Locate, Communicate, Breathe, and Exhale, a mindful approach to help people positively reframe racial threats. On April 12, students and teachers celebrated DEAR On April 12, students and teachers celebrated DEAR day. DEAR day stands for drop everything and read. On this day, students carried around their books and read for 10 minutes at the start of every class. Middle School Librarian Ms. Staci Fox also hosted a reading time in the library during recess with cookies. "I read the book ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ by Stephen Chbosky. I really enjoyed DEAR day because it gave me more time than I usually have to read," eighth-grader Olivia Levine said.

On March 26 eighth-graders traveled to the Borough On March 26 eighth-graders traveled to the Borough Market and the Globe Theater in regard to their upcoming Shakespeare English unit. This journey began at school in an everything to know about Shakespeare quiz bowl, students got into groups of 7 to 8 to compete. Later, students traveled in advisory groups on the tube headed to London Bridge. There they arrived at Borough Market where they had time to go around and buy lunch while exploring. After lunch advisory groups made their way to the theater. The experience started with a tour, then groups had a short walk to the Globe Theater's studios. Seventh-grader Shiv Jayaraman was the MC hosting the assembly. Acts included eighth-grader Esme Bagtazo Barsoum who sang "Me and The Sky" by Alice Fearn from the "Come From Away" Musical. Eighth-grader Pedro Antibas sang "Revenge" by XXXTENTACION while playing the electric guitar. Four students performed songs on the piano; Seventh-graders Matias Larrson, Silas Masimore, Ada Erinç, and eighth-grader Ian Maytorena Cuevas. High school students in the Human Rights Seminar c High school students in the Human Rights Seminar class came to grade 8 social studies classes to give advice about students' human rights projects as well as share about their own projects. The high schoolers involved who attended on March 11 were Saoiarse Burlingame, Marcus Chae, Rudi Chamria, and Rotem Dafna. There were also more high schoolers that attended on different days In the high school class, the broad topic changes every year, and this year it is children and youth. This means students can pick any topic in relation to that. During the talk students got the chance to workshop in small groups with each of the students. "The high school talk really helped me understand what topic I want to in-depth study for the project. The middle school gathered in the School Center fo The middle school gathered in the School Center for this month's "Celebrating Global Citizenship Assembly" on March 4. The assembly began with Middle School Technology Coordinator Mr. Colin Bridgewater recognizing seven students who participated in the Perse Coding Team Challenge. He announced that seventh-graders Silas Masimore and Shivan Singh were recognized with Certificates of Distinction, qualifying them for round 2 of the competition. Then, the Head of School, Mr. Matt Horvat, spoke about the school’s core values. Grade 7's Rish Vasupalli and Shiv Jayaraman did a presentation on the celebration of Holi and how their family celebrates it. The SJC shared about Women's History Month and essential times in women's history. SLD teacher, Ms. Duggan gave a brief presentation on neurodiversity week, followed by a video answering the question, "What does neurodiversity mean to you? After this, because March is heritage language month, Ms. Elsea showed students what it means to have a heritage language. Eighth graders Samyar Murray and Maxi Joorabchian shared about Nowruz, the Persian New Year, and the different ways their family celebrates it. As well as this sixth-grader Zayan Murtaza and his mother, Mrs. Ruksana Murtaza, the administrative assistant to the HS principal, shared about Muslim traditions in Ramadan starting on March 11. U14 Swimmers traveled to ACS Cobham to compete in U14 Swimmers traveled to ACS Cobham to compete in LSSAs on February 27. The meet was the end-of-season event for many swimmers who competed against ACS Cobham, ACS Hillingdon, and TASIS athletes. Girls and boys competed in many relays, including the 200m freestyle (50m per student) and 100 individual medley. In addition, swimmers competed in 2-3 individual races with various strokes against the other schools there. Seventh and eighth-grade students on the U14A and Seventh and eighth-grade students on the U14A and B basketball teams traveled to Belgium to play against the International School of Brussels February 23-24. Players not on the court and from different teams cheered for each other and there were several parents who traveled to watch and support as well. The victories were celebrated by students and coaches. Eighth-grader Sula von Bulow who plays for the girls’ A team said, “Having the opportunity to play one of my top sports with a team that knows exactly how to work together is one of the best feelings.” Von Bulow talked about the relationship between the girls and how it positively impacts the way they play on the court. “Because the majority of us have played together during other seasons, it created a strong bond on and off the court; having a smaller team helps a lot with that,” Von Bulow said. In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Da In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, seventh and eighth-graders and faculty had the chance to hear Benjamin Midler speak about his experience surviving WWII as a Jewish child from Poland. During the assembly, Midler explained that he moved through six different concentration camps at every chance given because, as he said, "This one couldn't be any worse than the last." During his talk, Midler gave crucial advice to students about their journey through life. For example, he said you should always consider the future, not the past. Midler also talked about how all of his friends who focused on the past are all dead but he at 95 years old still looks into the future. In addition to giving talks around the world about his experiences, Midler also wrote a book about the years he spent in those difficult times, “The Life of a Child Survivor, from Bialystock, Poland.” Eighth-grader Henry Duffy said, "I'm grateful that I got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about such a horrible time like the Holocaust from a real-life survivor." Seventh and eighth-grade students had an assembly Seventh and eighth-grade students had an assembly during the advisory time on January 24 about safety and safeguarding.. Director of Student Life Mr. Bullard started by talking about how to stay safe when you are near and out of school. For example, avoid walking around and flashing any valuables that could make you a target to the public. The school’s main responsibility is to keep students safe and having these assemblies twice a school year conveys and teaches students what they can do to be out of harm's way. School rules were restated to ensure they were clear for everyone to follow. Mr. Harrold who is the school’s Safeguarding Lead, talked about online safety when playing games with strangers while listing the top ten most dangerous/popular games in the world. Middle school students enjoy a Christmas-themed lu Middle school students enjoy a Christmas-themed lunch on December 13, just two days before the start of Winter Break. This lunch included turkey, onion stuffing, sausages, potatoes and gravy. As a sweet treat, brownies and pudding were served. As well as the delicious food, the cafeteria handed out Christmas crackers that included paper crowns, jokes, and small Christmas trees. "The Christmas crackers were really cool because they made a loud pop," eighth-grader Nico Scaff said. "I'm really looking forward to the break. The U14A girls and boys basketball teams won the W The U14A girls and boys basketball teams won the Westminster LBA mid-season tournament on December 7. Each team will now represent the borough of Westminster in the London Youth Games U14 basketball tournament. Eighth-grader McKinley Turner thinks the boys’ team collaborated very well for their first games considering they’ve only had one practice. The student council held a winter spirit assembly The student council held a winter spirit assembly during Advisory on December 8. There were various fun-packed activities, including a present-unwrapping race (with oven mitts!) with two students from each grade representing their color team. Another activity included students versus the grade 8 teachers trying to get an After-Eight mint from their forehead into their mouths without using their hands. Students also watched a teacher talent show where Mr. Afsahi and Mr. Deck won for their spectacular dad jokes. In addition, many students dressed up in pjs, warm winter clothes, and ugly or festive sweaters. "It was super cool to see teachers doing different cool activities outside of class,” eighth-grader Olivia Levine said. “My favorite part of it was Mrs. Brown and Ms. Yeo's hula hooping competition and Mr. McAlister's gymnastic skills. High school students from the Computer Science Hon High school students from the Computer Science Honor Society led an activity in fifth through eighth-grade advisories on November 27 💻. To celebrate the start of Computer Science and Computational Thinking week, high school students challenged students with some computational thinking activities. In grades 5 and 6, students had to come up with rules to help someone win at tic-tac-toe and then they traded rules to see if their steps worked. In grades 7 and 8, students learned about data compression by trying to translate nursery rhymes into coded messages. The high school students also talked about how computational thinking connected to computer science. Eleventh-grader Sage Sauders talked about how she had initially signed up for two introductory computer science courses in her freshman year, despite not knowing if she would like it or not. “But taking the courses, I found myself really excited by computer science and the opportunity to be creative whilst trying something new,” Saunders said. 📸 Photos by Zoe

During advisory time, students watched and participated in a Halloween-themed quiz bowl where participants were asked general questions, and took part in a lightning round and physical challenge. The Orange team came out on top in a closely fought battle🏆.
