At ASL, due to the nature of many student, faculty, and staff’s situations, the members of ASL’s community are constantly changing. Next year, Mr. Darryl Phelps, a current fifth-grade humanities teacher, will not be returning to the Middle School. Instead, he will be teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in the Lower School.
Mr. Phelps will be teaching grades 2-4 as an EAL specialist. EAL is a program for students with varying levels of English. “It’s all about getting their English skills up to native standards,” said Mr. Phelps. Before coming to ASL Mr. Phelps worked with multicultural students, and that has always been his main interest.
The current Lower School EAL specialist, Ms. Lawrence is leaving ASL this year, and Mr. Phelps decided he wanted to do something different.
